Scam Alerts

The Duval County Clerk’s Office never calls customers to ask for their bank account, credit card number or other financial information over the phone. If you are ever unsure that a message you received from the Clerk’s Office is valid, please call (904) 255-2000 to speak with a deputy clerk.

Caller ID Fraud

The Duval County Clerk’s Office has been made aware of scammers using caller ID fraud (known as spoofing) to attempt to trick citizens into believing that a call is coming from the Clerk’s Office (or other public agency). If you receive a call that you are unsure about from someone who identified themselves as a deputy clerk, you can always call the Clerk’s Office at (904) 255-2000 to verify that it was a valid call. Remember, the Clerk’s Office will never ask for financial information over the phone or by email.

Missed Jury Duty

The missed jury duty scam has been around for years. Usually, the caller pretends to be a law enforcement officer, state attorney, court official, or a deputy clerk saying that you failed to show for jury duty. Sometimes the callers are even sophisticated enough to use the name of a real judge or public official. The scammer tells you a fine was imposed and if you don't pay it, a warrant will be issued for your arrest. To resolve the problem, they may ask for your bank account number, or suggest purchasing a prepaid debit card or cryptocurrency. They may even ask for personal information such as your social security number. Please do not do this!

The Court, the Clerk's Office, or law enforcement do not call or email residents to request payment for missing jury duty. We will also never request payment via any sort of prepaid debit card or cryptocurrency. When in doubt, you can always call the Clerk's Office at (904) 255-2000 or report the call to JSO's non-emergency line at (904) 630-0500.

Traffic Citation Scam

The Duval Clerk’s Office and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) are warning consumers that they may be targeted by a company representing itself as the FLHSMV demanding payment for fraudulent citations. The company, which is not associated with the FLHSMV in any way, will send emails to consumers requesting payment of a citation within a certain timeframe and if the payment is not received on time, the company will falsely require a daily late fee payment.

The email sent to consumers includes a linked payment page and email address. While the linked payment page appears to be inactive at this time, the DHSMV is warning consumers that this is a scam and no payment should be made. If a consumer has made a payment, they should refute the charge and take the appropriate security measures with their financial institution.

Consumers should note the following:

  • The Clerk’s Office and the DHSMV do not email citations to customers
  • Payment of a citation will never be requested through email
  • Citation numbers are always seven alpha-numeric digits
  • If a consumer receives a notice regarding a suspicious citation, they should contact the Clerk's Office or call the FLHSMV immediately.
