Failure to respond to your citation(s) by selecting one of the available options within 30 calendar days of the issue date of the citation(s) will result in the suspension of your driver’s license and will require the payment of additional fees. Please review the options available to you carefully.

- Payment of your civil traffic citation is considered a conviction and points will be assessed to your driver’s license, if applicable.
- If you elect to pay your civil traffic citation you will not be allowed to elect the Driver Improvement School option at a later date.
Pay Civil Traffic Citation and Elect to Attend Driver Improvement School
- When you elect this option, you agree to pay the civil traffic citation in full and complete Driver Improvement School.
- You are not eligible for this option if you hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Florida law allows this election once in a 12-month period and no more than five (5) times in your lifetime.
- If you would like to contest your civil traffic citation, you can do one of the following to request a court date:
- Schedule a court date online
- Send a request by fax to (904) 255-2358
- Send a request by mail to the Traffic Violations Bureau Mailing Address
- Appear in person to make your request at any Clerk's Office location
No Contest Plea with Proof of Compliance (if eligible)
- If you receive a citation for certain driver’s license, registration, tag or insurance offenses, you can provide proof that the item has been corrected and receive a withhold of adjudication. No points will be assessed.
- You are not eligible for this option if you hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Florida law allows this election once in a 12-month period and no more than three (3) times in your lifetime.
Citations Eligible for Dismissal
- If you receive a citation for certain driver’s license, registration, tag or insurance offenses and are able to provide proof that the item was valid at the time the citation was written, you may be eligible to receive a dismissal.
Request Extension to Pay Citation
- If you are electing to pay your civil traffic citation but need additional time to pay, the Clerk's Office is authorized to grant a one-time 30 day payment extension. You must make this request in writing within 30 calendar days of receiving your citation to avoid additional late fees and possible suspension of your driver's license.
- You cannot request an extension if your civil traffic citation is past the due date.
- You must request extensions in person at any Clerk's Office location. Extensions will not be given over the phone.
- If you request an extension to pay your civil traffic citation, you waive your right to set a court date for your citation.
Payment of your citation is considered a conviction and points will be assessed to your driver’s license, if applicable.
If you elect the option to pay the citation you will not be allowed to elect to attend Driver Improvement School at a later date.
Note: If an incorrect amount has been entered on your citation in error by the law enforcement officer, the correct fee required by Florida Statute will be assessed and must be paid.
Citation Payment Options
Payment options for civil traffic citations include:
- Online using our online payment system within 30 calendar days of the issue date of the citation. After 30 calendar days from the issue date of the citation, online payment is no longer available.
- In person at any Clerk's Office Location
- Payment can be made in the form of cash, money order, cashier's check, certified check, or credit card (debit cards are processed as credit) at any Clerk's Office location. There is a non-refundable 3.5% service fee on all credit card payments.
- By mail to the Traffic Violations Bureau Mailing Address
- Payment must be received within 30 calendar days from the issue date of the citation. Postmarked dates are not considered in determining time and a grace period will not be offered.
- DO NOT MAIL CASH. Payments can be made in the form of money order, cashier's check or certified check made out to the Duval County Clerk of Court.
Citations that Require Documentation in Addition to Payment
If you received a citation for one of the following violations and are unable to provide the Clerk with proof that the item was valid at the time of the violation, you must provide the documentation as listed:
- Failure to carry/exhibit a driver’s license or expired license
- Provide proof that the driver’s license is now valid in addition to payment of the citation.
- Failure to carry/exhibit a registration or expired registration
- Provide proof that the registration is now valid or complete a Proof of Compliance Affidavit form in addition to payment of the citation.
- For failure to carry/exhibit valid insurance
- Provide proof that the insurance is now valid or complete a Proof of Compliance Affidavit form in addition to payment of the citation.
Note: Proof shall consist of a valid, renewed, or reinstated driver’s license, registration certificate, or valid proof of motor vehicle insurance. Proof of insurance can be provided in the form of an insurance card, policy declarations page, certificate of insurance or in electronic form.
***If you cannot provide proof of compliance for any of the above listed charges, a Proof of Compliance Affidavit form with a valid reason must be completed and payment of the citation along with a $7.00 Affidavit fee must be paid in person at any Clerk's Office Location within 30 calendar days of the issue date of the citation.***
Note: Upon payment of no proof of motor vehicle insurance, a guilty plea (conviction) is entered with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). As a result of the conviction, FLHSMV will suspend the violator’s driving privilege for 3 months and may place a hold on any vehicle tag renewals.
You must elect to attend Driver Improvement School at the time you pay the citation.
When you elect this option you agree to:
- Pay your civil traffic citation in full
- Complete Driver Improvement School and
- Return the Certificate of Completion to the Clerk's Office within 60 days of the date of election. Upon payment and submitting the Driver Improvement School Certificate, adjudication of guilty will be withheld and no points will be assessed.
Note: If an incorrect fee amount has been entered on your citation in error by the law enforcement officer, the correct fee required by Florida Statute will be assessed and must be paid.
Traffic School Requirements and Guidelines
- You are NOT eligible for this option if you hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a Commercial License Permit (CLP).
- You are NOT eligible for this option if you were driving a commercial motor vehicle at the time of your citation was issued.
- Florida law allows for this election to be made once in a 12-month period and no more than eight (8) times in a lifetime
- This option is not available for citations that require additional paperwork or proof of compliance to be provided to the Clerk's Office
- Determine your eligibility to attend a state of Florida certified Driver Improvement School by visiting the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website.
You may pay the applicable fees by one of the following options:
- Pay and elect school online using our online payment system
- In person at one of the Clerk's Office Locations
- Payment can be made in the form of cash, money order, cashier's check, certified check, or credit card (debit cards are processed as credit) at any Clerk's Office location. There is a non-refundable 3.5% service fee on all credit card payments
- Mailing the applicable fees to the Traffic Violations Bureau Mailing Address along with the affidavit you received with your citation. If the affidavit is not notarized you must include an additional $7.00 affidavit fee
- Payment must be received within 30 calendar days from the issuance date of the citation. Postmarked dates are not considered in determining time. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a grace period.
- DO NOT MAIL CASH. Payments can be made in the form of money order, cashier's check or certified check made payable to the Duval County Clerk of Court.
Failure to provide the Clerk's Office with a Driver Improvement School Certificate of Completion by the due date will result in additional fees and the suspension of your driver's license.
***It is your responsibility to provide proof of completion to the Clerk's office. While the traffic school should submit a certificate on your behalf, you should review the case docket availabe on CORE to ensure it is docketed to your case.***
You may submit your school completion forms within 60 days from the date of election in one of the following ways:

If you wish to contest your civil traffic citation, you may schedule a court date to appear before a judge by one of the following methods:
- Online by clicking Schedule a Court Date
- Request in person at any Clerk's Office Location
- Send a request by fax to (904) 255-2358
- Send a request by mail to the Traffic Violations Bureau Mailing Address (please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope)
Request for court dates MUST be received within 30 calendar days from the date the citation was issued or it will result in late fees being assessed and a possible suspension of driving privileges.
Court dates will not be made by telephone.
Note: If you elect to appear before a judge/hearing officer, you waive your right to pay your civil traffic citation.
Attorneys are required to schedule online or e-file via the E-portal to request court dates.
Citations that require a mandatory court appearance include but are not limited to the following:
- Leaving a child in an unattended vehicle
- Load dropping/shifting
- Accident involving serious bodily injury
- Accident involving fatality
- Passing on the enter/exit side of a school bus
- Speed 30+ MPH in excess of posted speed limits
- Criminal traffic charges (except those that qualify for a No Contest Plea with Proof of Compliance)
Note: Court dates for these violations may not be scheduled using the online system.
You must schedule a court date by one of the following methods:
- Request in person at any Clerk's Office Locations
- Send request by fax to (904) 255-2358
- Send a request by mail to the Traffic Violations Bureau Mailing Address (please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope)
Request for court dates MUST be received within 30 calendar days from the date the citation was issued or it will result in late fees being assessed and a possible suspension of driving privileges.

If you are charged with operating a motor vehicle in unsafe condition or that is not properly equipped pursuant to F.S.316.610 and F.S. 316.2935, you may pay a reduced fee amount within 30 calendar days from the date the citation was issued if you do the following:
- Have the defect corrected.
- Pay a $4.00 fee to any local law enforcement agency to certify the defect was corrected. The Affidavit of Compliance certifying the defect was corrected is listed under option 6 on the citation.
- Provide the Clerk's Office with the signed Affidavit of Compliance and the reduced fee amount of $98.00 in person or by mail.
- Payment can be made in person in the form of cash, money order, cashier's check, certified check, or credit card (debit cards are processed as credit) at any Clerk's Office Location. There is a non-refundable 3.5% service fee on all credit card payments.
- Payment can be made by mail to the Traffic Violations Bureau Mailing Address in the form of money order, cashier's check or certified check made payable to the Duval County Clerk of Court. DO NOT MAIL CASH.
No points will be assessed against your license if you complete these steps.
If you received a citation for one of the charges listed below and the item was NOT VALID at the time the citation was issued, you may be eligible to enter a plea of no contest and receive a withhold of adjudication without having to appear in court.
- Expired registration
- Failure to display registration
- No valid driver's license
- Expired driver's license (less than 6 months)
- Driver's license not carried / exhibited
- No proof of motor vehicle insurance
- Driving while license suspended or revoked (certain offenses)
If you qualify, you must make this election within 30 calendar days from the date you received the citation.
You are not eligible for this option if you hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Florida law allows for this election to be made once in a 12-month period and no more than (3) times in your lifetime.
If your driver's license, vehicle registration or insurance was NOT VALID at the time the citation was issued, but was corrected within 30 calendar days of receiving your citation, you may qualify for this option. You must provide proof that the item was corrected at the time of payment.
You may submit your proof with payment of your civil traffic citation by one of the following options:
- In person at any Clerk's Office Location
- Payment can be made in the form of cash, money order, cashier's check, certified check, or credit card (debit cards are processed as credit) at any Clerk's Office location. There is a non-refundable 3.5% service fee on all credit card payments
- By mail to Traffic Violations Bureau Mailing Address
- Payment must be received within 30 calendar days from the issuance date of the citation. Postmarked dates are not considered in determining time. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a grace period.
- DO NOT MAIL CASH. Payments can be made in the form of money order, cashier's check or certified check made payable to the Duval County Clerk of Court.
***If you cannot provide proof of compliance for any of the above listed charges, a Proof of Compliance Affidavit form with a valid reason must be completed and payment of the citation along with a $7.00 Affidavit fee must be paid in person at one of our Clerk's Office Locations within 30 calendar days of the issue date of the citation. If your driver's license, vehicle registration or insurance was valid at the time the citation was issued, see the Citations Eligible for Dismissal section.
If you receive a citation for one of the following violations and are able to provide proof that the item was VALID at the time the citation was issued, you may be eligible to pay a $10.00 fee and receive a dismissal:
- Expired driver's license (6 months or less)
- Failure to possess a valid vehicle registration
- Failure to possess a valid driver's license
- Expired tag (6 months or less)
- No proof of Insurance per F.S.316.646(1)
Proof that the driver's license, vehicle registration or insurance was VALID at the time the citation was issued must be produced along with the $10.00 payment to the Clerk's Office. Proof and payment may be provided in person at any Clerk's Office Location or mailed to the Traffic Violations Bureau Mailing Address.
Note: This option must be made within 30 calendar days of issuance of the citation.
If you are unable to pay your civil traffic citation within the required time of 30 calendar days from the issue date, you have the option to request a payment extension. The Clerk's Office is authorized to grant a one-time 30 day payment extension.
You must request the extension within 30 calendar days of receiving your traffic citation. The request must be made in person at one of the Clerk's Office Locations and requires a signature on the Payment Extension Form.
Extensions are not given on court ordered fines.
Note: If you request an extension to pay your civil traffic citation, you waive your right to set a court date for your citation or exercise the dismissal option and reduced fine option.
If you have not paid your citation or court ordered fine by the due date, your outstanding balance will be turned over to a collection agency. Once your citation has been turned over to the collection agency, you must contact the appropriate collection agency to make payment. You will need to make payment for the original fine, plus late fees and a 30-percent collection surcharge.

A civil traffic infraction is a non-criminal charge that can usually be disposed of by the payment of a civil penalty or an election to attend Driver Improvement School. Examples of civil charges include:
- Pedestrian violations
- Bicycle violations
- Non-moving violations such as failure to wear your seat belt; not carrying your driver’s license, registration or insurance card; expired registration less than six months; or expired driver’s license less than six months;
- Moving violations such as speeding; running a red light or stop sign; careless driving; child-restraint violations; or failing to maintain a single lane
The following charges require you to attend a court hearing:
- Leaving a child in an unattended vehicle
- Load dropping/shifting
- Accident involving serious bodily injury
- Accident involving a fatality
- Passing on entrance/exit side of school bus
- Speed 30+ MPH in excess of posted speed limits
If the item was valid at the time you were issued the citation, you may provide proof of your valid item to the Clerk’s Office at the time of payment. You will need to include a $10.00 dismissal fee and a copy of your citation. The Clerk’s Office will then dismiss the charge.
If you have proof that your insurance was valid at the time the citation was issued, you may provide proof of your valid insurance coverage along with the $10.00 dismissal fee and a copy of your citation to the Clerk's Office. Proof of insurance can be provided in the form of an insurance card, policy declarations page, certificate of insurance, or in electronic form. The Clerk's Office will then dismiss the charge. If your insurance was not valid at the time the citation was issued, you can either request a court date or pay the citation. Payment of the citation is considered a conviction.

No. Citations must be paid in the county they were issued.

No. The Clerk’s Office cannot accept these payments. Parking citations are issued by the Public Parking Division and can be paid at any Duval County Tax Collector’s Office.
That is not a question the Clerk's Office is able to answer. We suggest that you consult your insurance company for this information.
No, election must be made at the time the citation is paid.
No. The citation will appear on your full driving record, however it will show that adjudication was withheld. Additionally, no points will be assessed against your license.

While the traffic school should submit a certificate on your behalf to the Clerk's Office, you are ultimately responsible to provide proof of completion to the Clerk's Office within 60 days from the date of election.
